Education and skill development will break the cycle of poverty that plagues sub-Saharan Africa. Our first initiative is to encourage women to take charge of their own destiny, and to protect and care for the children left orphaned and homeless by the AIDS pandemic. The NeedAIDS and African ChildrenEvery 14 seconds a child is orphaned in sub-Saharan Africa. The UN estimates that 68 million people will die in sub-Saharan Africa because of AIDS in the next 20 years. In a single school of 570 children, 30 - 40 children are orphaned because of HIV/AIDS. The more fortunate orphans are taken in by relatives. The less fortunate are forced to live in the streets, resorting to theft and prostitution to survive. Their desperation is overwhelming; in order to escape these daily struggles one child has even confessed to her teacher that suicide will one day be her only option for escape. The Situation in KenyaKenya has partially addressed the AIDS pandemic in Nairobi and its eastern provinces, but nothing exists in the western provinces. The AIDS pandemic is currently most rapidly expanding along the truck routes running through Kenya’s western provinces. The children who live in this neglected western region are in critical need of support. Construction of The Nambale Residential School, and subsequent creation of a solid infrastructure, will address these orphaned children’s needs. It will be the first residential school in western Kenya, located in the Busia province. The WIKS organization, under the direction of its founder Rev. Evalyn Wakhusama, from the Busia province of Western Kenya, is currently dedicating its support to the realization of the NAMBALE CHILDREN’S HOME.
