Initiatives/Goals

The Nambale Residential School

Our primary objective is to create a residential school for AIDS orphans where school-aged children (K-12) will not only be loved, fed and nurtured, but where they will acquire the education to prepare them for future studies at the university level or for employment in a skilled trade. The school will feature both a conventional academic curriculum, as well as an artisan’s program.

WIKS is proposing to implement a five-year project to establish a home and school for orphans and vulnerable children in Nambale, Busia District of Western Province in Kenya. The long-range goal of the Nambale Residential School will be to create an institution that is self-sustaining through income-generating activities such as the sale of wares created by the residents in the artisan’s program. The complex will offer a solid primary education with close mentoring of students. Academically driven children will be given a chance to pursue academic excellence in other institutions of higher learning. The apprentice-driven students will be trained in various disciplines such as carpentry, tailoring, computer and mechanical skills. The objective of providing these life skills is to create self-reliance.

Our first success is the completed acquisition of seven acres for the school’s location along the Busia-Mumias road, 300 meters from the Nambale Shopping Center.

The Nambale Residential School will house and school approximately 300 children, of which 128 will be children orphaned by AIDS. The non-orphans will pay a reasonable tuition that will help defray the costs of operating the facility. The project will be built on a seven-acre plot of arable, flat land on a main road with access to utilities and services. In addition to the artisan’s program, there are plans to construct a conference/retreat center on site, which will provide further sources of revenue to enhance the self-sustaining character of the facility.

The Plan

Acquiring of a seven-acre tract of undeveloped land in Nambale (done)
Preparing of architectural/ engineering plans for buildings
Construction of units for 300 children
Recruitment and training residential and educational staff
Equipping and furnishing the residential units and school
Fundraising and resource development

Projected Cost, Phase 1:

Land acquisition $ 23,000
Dormitory and bathrooms for
128 children and 16 staff
$ 111,000
Water and electrical utilities $ 40,000
Dining Hall and Kitchen $ 55,000

All administrative efforts are done on a donation/volunteer basis, so WIKS incurs no administrative fees. All funds will be maintained at bank accounts in the United States under the control and supervision of the American affiliate of WIKS, WIKS-USA. No moneys will be disbursed unless appropriate accounting safeguards and other verification measures are in place.
